Studio Sklim

Studio Sklim Tokyo/Singapore - Project Timeline
Studio Sklim commissioned us with corporate identity design brush-up, development of a playful-experimental website design and bilingual English/Japanese CMS implementation.

Studio SKLIM is an emerging design practice establishing its roots in the fields of furniture design, interiors, landscape, architecture and urbanism. Tokyo / Singapore

The identity design consists of the main logo and 5 icons representing the various fields of work of Studio Sklim: Architecture, Urban Planing, Interior, Furniture and Landscape. The logo icons of the website are in fact linked buttons to each category. On individual project pages they are highlighted according to work involved for this project i.e. the 360° Kiosks involved Architecture, Furniture and Landscape.

The visual project timeline on the front page of the site is one of the most unique design features. It displays in a playful way the duration of each project, thumbnail images are linked to actual projects. The timeline can be mouse-dragged to left or right to scroll to past or present (possibly future for upcoming projects).

The project listing page was nick-named “sushi plate” due to the similarity, it also reminds of a conveyor belt sushi restaurant (回転寿司, kaiten-zushi). The round shape of the icons is referenced in the design in various places such as this page or in the featured project on the home page.

Project detail pages allow navigation of the slideshow image gallery via hoover arrows or the thumbnail menu below. The goal was to keep images as large as possible, but still support minimum monitor/screen sizes without compromising on navigation of the slideshow. Image captions or tags may be added to each project.

The site is using a colour desaturation script for images on listing pages such as the press listing or top page featured images to preserve low-key colours. Mouse-roll over changes them back to colour. News images are covered by random pattern which reshuffle on reload. The patterns are derived from textures and shadings of actual 3D CAD renderings of Studio Sklim.

The website is setup as bilingual English/Japanese CMS installation, however the Japanese section is still hidden. It will be unlocked once all content has been translated to Japanese.
